The exercises I developed with Sadie are just guidelines. Depending on your dog’s size and your imagination, everything is possible. The only rule for Dogercise is that it should be fun for both of you. Dogs are not lazy, and they can inspire us to shed our lethargic tendencies. You’ll find more ways to burn calories with your dog than you will possibly have time for if you just follow her lead. (Literally!)

Mealtime Squats

These were the first discovery in the development of Dogercise. It’s very simple. I keep Sadie’s food in an upright plastic container on the back porch. I stand in front of it, holding her bowl in one hand with my legs slightly apart and my feet turned out. I lower my body to the floor until my thighs are parallel with the floor. I then open the container and slowly rise back up. I repeat this and take the scoop out of the container on the second squat. On each successive squat, I get a small amount of food out of the container with the scoop and place it in her bowl. Not only does this give your thighs a workout, it helps develop balance, because your dog will be in the way. You’ll have to dodge out of her way so you don’t spill the food in the bowl while you’re doing this exercise . . . ever hear of such a good combination for balance and toning?! It will keep her guessing how much food she’s getting as well.
